How to Clear a Snorkel: The Blast That Saves Your Dignity

Every new snorkeler has the same terrifying first act: water sneaks down the tube, they inhale it, they cough, they flail, and they surface convinced snorkeling is trying to kill them. It is not. Clearing your snorkel is a two-second skill, and once it is automatic you will wonder what all the panic was about. Brad panicked for a solid month. You can do better.

Why water gets in and why that is normal

First, relax about the water itself. Some water in the tube is completely normal, not a sign you are doing anything wrong. It gets in when a wave washes over the top, when you dip your head too far, when you duck under the surface, or simply from splashing. Every snorkeler deals with this constantly; the difference between a beginner and a comfortable snorkeler is not that the pro keeps water out, it is that the pro clears it without thinking.

The reason it feels scary at first is that a little water sitting at the bottom of the tube gurgles and threatens to reach your mouth. Your instinct is to inhale sharply to check, which is exactly the wrong move because it pulls that water straight into your throat. The whole skill is about overriding that panic reflex with a calm, deliberate action. The blast method, step by step

The blast is the workhorse technique. You use a hard, sharp exhale to fire the water up and out of the top of the tube. Here is exactly how:

  1. Keep your face in the water and the snorkel tube pointing up toward the surface, roughly vertical.
  2. Do not inhale. When you feel or hear water in the tube, resist the urge to breathe in.
  3. Exhale hard and sharp through your mouth in one strong burst, as if you are trying to blow out a candle across the room. This forces the water up and out the top opening.
  4. Immediately take your next breath in slowly and gently, not greedily, so if a stray drop remains it stays low rather than getting sucked in.

The magic is in the sharpness. A weak, hesitant puff will not shift the water; a single confident blast will. Think one decisive burst, then a careful sip of air. That rhythm, blast then gentle inhale, is the entire technique.

The displacement method, for when you surface from a dive

There is a second, more elegant method that experienced snorkelers use after ducking underwater, and it wastes less air than a full blast. It is called displacement clearing, and it uses physics instead of lung power.

When you dive down, your snorkel fills completely with water. As you swim back toward the surface, tilt your head slightly back so the snorkel tube points down toward the bottom, then trail it upward as you rise. Because the tube is angled downward relative to your rising motion, the water tends to stay put or drain while a pocket of air pushes up through it. Just before your head breaks the surface, give a small, gentle exhale to nudge the last of the water out, and you surface into a clear tube. It feels like a party trick the first time it works. Why these methods work

Both techniques come down to one idea: water is heavy and wants to fall, and a burst of moving air will carry it along. In the blast method, your sharp exhale creates a fast column of air rushing up the tube, and that moving air drags the water out the top with it, the same way blowing across a straw ejects a droplet. Timing your next breath to be gentle means that even if the blast was not perfect, you are not yanking leftover water downward into your mouth.

In the displacement method, you are letting gravity and your upward motion do the work. By keeping the open end low as you ascend, the water simply is not positioned to run down into your mouth, and the small exhale at the top clears the last bit with minimal effort. Understanding the why matters because when a clear does not fully work, you will instinctively know whether to blast harder or reposition the tube, rather than just panicking.

Practice drills to make it automatic

You do not want to be learning this in choppy open water. Build the reflex somewhere calm and shallow where you can stand up any time:

  • The standing drill. In shallow water where your feet touch, put your face down and deliberately let a little water into the tube, then blast it clear. Repeat until it feels boring.
  • The flood-on-purpose drill. Fully fill the snorkel while standing, then practice one strong blast to empty it. Getting comfortable clearing a completely full tube removes the fear of the worst case.
  • The dive-and-displace drill. Once the blast is second nature, practice a shallow duck under and try the displacement clear on the way up, finishing with a small blast as backup.

Do these in a pool or calm shallows, not on your first reef. Ten minutes of deliberate practice turns clearing from a scary emergency into an unconscious habit you will use hundreds of times a day without noticing.

Common mistakes, fixes, and when to just surface

When clearing goes wrong, it is almost always one of these:

  • Inhaling to check for water. The classic. Never test with an inhale; if in doubt, blast first, then breathe gently.
  • A timid puff instead of a real blast. Commit to one sharp, strong exhale. Half-hearted does not clear the tube.
  • Breathing in too fast after the blast. Your recovery breath should be slow and controlled so you do not inhale any remaining drops.
  • Tube not pointing up. If your snorkel is angled sideways, the blast has nowhere good to send the water. Keep it roughly vertical when clearing at the surface.

And the most important point of all: if you ever get a real mouthful, choke, or feel panic rising, just lift your head out of the water, take the snorkel out, and breathe normal air. There is no shame in it and no rule that says you must clear underwater. Surfacing is always a valid reset.
